The first line of syllabary consists of the five vowels a, i, u, e, o. The remainder are for combinations of the various consonants with these vowels.

あ / a Reading
Similar to "father".

1. A short horizontal stroke.
2. A long vertical stroke that crosses the first stroke.
3. A clockwise spiral over the second stroke.
い / i Reading
Similar to "meet".
Writing
1. A long vertical stroke that ends in a slight upswing to the right.
2. A shorter vertical stroke, next to the first.
う / u Reading
Similar to "food".
Writing
1. A short diagonal stroke.
2. A right curve that turns downward.
え / e Reading
Similar to "end".
Writing
1. A short diagonal stroke.
2. A short horizontal stroke, then a long diagonal stroke to the down left,then up and down to the right. (similar to the letter ‘Z’)
お / o Reading
Similar to "oil".
Writing
1. A short horizontal stroke.
2. A long vertical stroke,and then becomes a clockwise spiral.
3. A short diagonal.
