A: 会議で思ったことを言っただけなのに、上司に睨まれたよ。
B: 『出る杭は打たれる』よ。気をつけたほうがいいよ。
Romaji:
A: Kaigi de omotta koto o itta dake nanoni, jooshi ni niramareta yo.
B: Kono kaisha wa 『Deru kui wa utareru』kara, ki o tsuketa hooga iiyo.
Translation:
A: I have just said what I was thinking, but my boss was staring at me in anger.
B: "Forwardness will cause trouble". You’d better be careful.
出る杭は打たれる / Deru kui wa utareru :
This proverb means that remarkable things would be suppressed by others. Also, talented people would be reproached due to jealousy, and may lose their position. The expression came from that the highest stake would be driven first when they are all in line.


Another example
A: 彼女、どんな仕事でもこなして、かなりみんなに期待されているらしいわよ。
B: でも調子に乗って意見なんていい始めると『出る杭は打たれる』ことになりかねないよね。

Romaji:
A: Kanojo, donna shigoto demo konashite, kanari minna ni kitai sareteiru rashii wayo.
B: Demo chooshi ni notte iken nante iihajimeru to “deru kui wa utareru” koto ni narikanenai yone.

Translation:
A: She manages any kind of work and they seem to expect a lot of her.
B: : But once she gets conceited and starts speaking out on something aloud, that would cause lots of trouble, wouldn't it?
